22 Red Book Species

22 of our 125 resident species are listed in the Red Book of Azerbaijan. The zoo creates the conditions for them to breed and helps sustain wild populations.

Breeding & Reintroduction

The park takes part in projects to increase the numbers of rare species and return them to the wild — part of its new mission since 2021.

EARAZA Member Since 1995

The Baku Zoo belongs to the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums and exchanges animals with zoos across the region.

Education

A lecture hall, digital information displays and guided tours introduce visitors to the unique nature of Azerbaijan and the importance of protecting it.

Plans for the Future

A new, considerably larger zoo on the Absheron Peninsula is under discussion. These are still only plans — the current park continues to operate on Bakikhanov Street.
